When to Discuss Adoption with Your Child

Leah: Hi my name is Leah, I live in Orlando and I was wondering at what age should a child be told they are adopted?

Vanessa Jensen: Leah you have asked the tough question. And again sometimes, it depends on the situation but in general, it really works best if kids know about they adoption from the very beginning just as many of us pictures of our kids from the day they were in the hospital, from their first birthday lying around the house, if kids see pictures and celebrations of the day arrived and they understand that being adopted a different way of becoming part of a family, it works a lot better. A lot of families even celebrate that by having a birthday every year but also a home coming day, or an arrival day, it's the day that whole family celebrates the day they become a family with that child. So it works better if it's just a routine everyday part of life and celebrating the back of the child as part of your family.
