Michael Schade: Hi, my name Michael Schade. I am a PVC Campaign Coordinator with the Center for Health, Environment and Justice. Today we are going to be talking about the types of harmful chemical agents that you come in contact with in the day-to-day.
Host: Where in your home are harmful chemicals found?
Michael Schade: Any consumer products in the home including building materials, contain harmful chemicals that have been linked to cancer, birth effects, reproductive health problems, asthma and other serious health problems. Some of the chemicals that we are most concerned about, include PVC plastic, phthalates, lead, Bisphenol A as well as chemicals that are used in cleaning products.
These materials and chemicals are very commonly used in our homes, and unfortunately these chemicals can leach out of consumer products when parents use them in their homes, when children chew on them, when they clean with them and when they are generally used in our homes. These are chemicals that are linked to very serious diseases that are on the rise in the general population. The good news is that there are safer and cost effective products that are out there, and there is no need for parents to use these unnecessary harmful chemicals in their home.
