My crazy green idea for the next X Prize? Floating algae farms in the ocean that produce bio-fuels, that are carbon negative and ecologically regenerative in their design, that is, to enhance the ocean ecology in which they operate by sequestering and removing toxins and providing habitat, just contributing to the overall health for the ocean ecology, repairing the damage that we’ve done.
The need for this is tremendous. The oceans are probably the most degraded ecosystem on the planet. All the pollution from industry and agriculture and consumer wastes, all eventually wind up in the ocean. Erosion goes to the ocean, right? The ocean are also home to phytoplankton and these organisms are at the very base of global biological processes. They transpire more CO2, the major greenhouse gas, than any other organism on the planet and they’re showing signs of severe decline. These organisms are also at the base of the ocean food chain, and it’s estimated that in my lifetime, there will be no seafood left. No seafood. I mean what do we say, “Sorry kids”?
The oceans are at the front lines of the ecological crisis as fuel is for the economic one. My idea addresses both, by providing a sustainable source of fuel and at the same time regenerating the ocean ecology. Our problems are way too big to be solved merely by replacing one fuel source for another or driving a more fuel-efficient car. Everything we do must serve to facilitate the repair of the entire planet. I believe the boldness of my idea reflects the very best spirit of the X Prize competition.
