Whether Pregnancy During Menopause Is Possible

Joie: Hi I'm Joie. I'm from Princeton, New Jersey and I was wondering when I talk a pregnancy test, if the results come back positive are they because of possible menopausal symptoms or if it’s an actual positive result from pregnancy?

Dr. Petra Casey: Great question Joie. Generally, women in their late 40s, early 50s may experience menopausal symptoms and may experience irregularity in their menstrual period, but they may also become pregnant. And the way that we can tell those two conditions apart is primarily clinically, as well using some simple laboratory testing such as the pregnancy test which would be positive if a woman were pregnant. We also can use a laboratory test called an FSH to determine whether a woman has reached her menopause.
