Whitening Toothpaste

Nicole: My name is Nicole and I'm 33 years old. I'm from Los Angeles, California. My question is about whitening toothpaste. I've been seeing whitening toothpaste a lot in the stores and I am just wondering what kind of chemicals go into making that product, and I am also wondering do they pose any long-term or serious health risks, if you use them for a long period of time?

Dr. Daniel Wilson: Hey Nicole, that's a common question. The chemicals that are in those toothpastes are typically hydrogen peroxide; it's the same material that dentists use in bleaches that we use in the office. Very little risk unless you swallow a whole tube of toothpaste, which is not common. The big issue with these toothpaste is that they are not in contact with your teeth long enough to be particularly effective. So, although they maybe great toothpaste otherwise, they're not particularly effective in whitening your teeth.
