Who Is Affected By Sex Addiction
On behalf of tvlesson.com, I'm Dr. Carol Clark, a sex therapist with drcarolclark.com. Let’s talk a little bit about who sex addiction affects. A sex addict is affected personally because there are unable to form intimate connections with people or once they are acting out addictively, doing those behaviors such as internet pornography, masturbation, going to strip clubs, picking up prostitutes. Those are the kind of behaviors that influence and affect negatively their personal relationships.
People become sex addicts out of a lost of a personal sense of power and control, out of a lost of intimacy. Maybe they never learned to be intimate because of their family upbringing. And so they grow up wanting to fill that hole in their soul. And they do it through these pseudo intimate connections that they try to establish. So they're affecting themselves negatively because they're trying to feel that hole that can't be filled through sexually acting out behavior. They're negatively affecting the people around them who love them because they are cut off from those intimate attachments because they are always thinking about their sexual behavior or doing it or recovering from the affects and feeling that shame. And that cuts them off from people.
So the people around them who love them especially the partners feel that absence of their love one. Also children, the children in addictive household suffer from the consequences of a parent who's not fully present and another parent who is so focused on the addicted parent than they're not paying attention to the children. The victims or partners of a sex addict are also negatively affected because they're objectified. So that’s a little bit about who is affected by sex addiction.
