Hillary Kerr: Welcome to the Who What Wear fashion closet, I am Hillary Kerr.
Katherine Power: And I am Katherine Power. Today we are going to discuss one of the most stressful style situations out there. What to wear for a job interview. Now the mistake that most women make is that they think a boring black pant suit is the only way to go and that is simply not true.
Hillary Kerr: Naturally you want to look professional but you also want to convey your taste level and personality through your outfit as well. We will show you some stylish non-suit alternatives that are appropriate for any industry.
Katherine Power: We will also give you some tips on how to work some unconventional items into your interview outfit. But first, let's take a look at a couple of ladies who are setting the style bar pretty high.
Female Speaker: Here is Lauren Conrad after she already got the job as the Face of Mark Cosmetics. Here she is shooting their campaign in a classic black dress with her trademark headband a wide black belt.
Another great example of professional chic is this skirt, T-shirt and sweater combo on Katherine Heigl. She shows us her creative side by finishing off the outfit with a not so basic burgundy bag.
Hillary Kerr: With those two muses in mind, let's put together a couple of outfits that are appropriate for a variety of interview situations.
Katherine Power: Don't think that you have to wear all the pieces of a suit together. You can break it up and wear the jacket over a dress or the pants with a beautiful blouse.
Hillary Kerr: Your interview clothes don't need to be expensive but they do need to fit you perfectly. If your clothes are tailored to your body, they will look expensive even if they are not.
Katherine Power: Our first look is a little bit corporate but still totally cute. Instead of going with traditional pieces, we chose this sleeveless white Alexander Wang dress and while it's technically a cocktail dress, the hem line and the neck are appropriate for work as long as we cover the rest of the skin with a blazer.
Hillary Kerr: To add interest to this otherwise simple outfit we wrapped an extra-long brown belt around Elly's natural waist and added some gold jewelry. Flats are too casual for a job interview as are open-toed shoes. So, to finish this look, we picked a pair of closed toed heels.
Katherine Power: And if this look is still a bit fashion forward for your corporate world, you can simplify it by taking off the belt.
Hillary Kerr: For the second look, we decide to go for something a little bit more colorful and casual, it's probably best for someone applying for a creative job. We started it off with this electric blue A-line dress by Theory and then added a charcoal cardigan and matching heels.
Katherine Power: As we mentioned before, you want to choose specific accessories to show off your personality and while you don't want to scare off a potential boss by wearing some over the top statement piece, you could show a little bit of edginess by choosing an unusual piece of jewelry or an unexpected detail. For example, we removed the belt that came with this dress and treated it out for a black patent leather belt. And there you have it.
Hillary Kerr: Thanks for hanging out with us on the Who What Wear fashion closet.
