Why Older People Wake Up More Often

Eugene: Hello. My name is Eugene and I’m from Lansing, Michigan. And I was wondering if older people wake up in the night more often than the others?

Jonathan: Well excellent question Eugene. On average, older people do wake up more in the night than younger people. And let me just explain that often times that’s completely normal. The sleep pattern changes as people get older such that doing a sleep cycle as people go from barely sleep to deep sleep and then, in lighter sleep again, often times awakenings occur that are quite normal.

In addition to that however, common conditions can result in people having to get up for other reasons, pain and the joint for example or having go to the bathroom can often interrupts sleep and cause people to wake up.
