Erik: Why is patience an important attribute to consider when measuring success?
Dan: Buddy, that’s a smart question, you’re a smart man there man! [laughs] This is particularly tough in start ups because there’s this image, there’s a story, there’s this mythology that start ups happen and then the next day they’re forty-five billion dollar businesses and that’s just not true. In a lot of cases it takes a long time to fully develop the idea, in some cases you have the idea well before the markets ready for it or people are really ready for it. So, I think patience is huge, I mean if you have the good vision and you really believe in it, I think a lot of times you just got to stick it through against all the adversity and against what people are saying about it.
Erik: That’s right, and how do you fight back when people push against that?
Dan: For me it was never really a problem because I really believed in what I was doing and you know, I don’t really care what people thought and now people are coming around, you know? It’s the right time and I think it’s a couple of years later and people are starting to believe, which is cool, but I think it’s one, having the confidence in your vision and the second thing is having – finding people around you who believe too and it’s hard to do that but once you do that gives you a lot more confidence, if they’re smart, respected people who you really like and they believe in it too it’s a lot easier to keep doing it day to day.
