Why should pregnant women take omega 3s?
Sue Brennan: For the mother, it’s very important in her developing child to have an adequate
level of omega 3s. There are a couple reasons for this. The neuronal development
of the infant is very critical in the first months and there have been some studies
where they’re supplementing women that have been shown to have poor diet with
additional omega 3s. In terms of the after birth, giving the infant omega 3s in
infant formula—DHA—has shown to help with vision and even the learning. If
the mother has been nursing and has been on the omega 3 supplements for, like
the first 12 weeks that carries forward into the child’s health. For women that are
at risk of preterm delivery, it has been found that adding a supplement of omega 3
fatty acids to their diet has helped reduce the risk of preterm delivery and risk to
the child.
