This country loves to visit jaguars and their natural habitat, walk through rainforest, marvelous waterfalls and visit Pine Forests. Hi, I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re looking at the natural wonders of Belize.
The natural beauty of Belize is one of its main tourist’s spots. Due to its unique location between North and South America, the country boasts of rich assortment of plants and animals. The Belize Zoo is an ideal place to the wildlife up close while learning more about the flora and fauna of the country. For example Belize boasts over 300 species of orchids including the bark orchid which is the country’s national flower. Belize showcases several wildlife reserves. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife’s Sanctuary was first founded as the sanctuary for the jaguar.
Several endangered bird species also called the sanctuary home like the Scarlet Macaw and the keel-billed Toucan, three groups of Hala monkeys were transplanted to the Cockscomb in 1992 as an endangered species. Today, the monkeys were always often heard in the forest as the mammal is thriving in its new habitat.
The sanctuary’s forest showcases a large number of orchid species and large trees such as mahogany and Caesar. Because of the presence of these types of wood, logging played a large role in Belize’s economy for many years.
Mountain Pine ridge forest reserve is another reserve in Belize. This one is created for the preservation of the native pine forest. This is the area closest to the equator where fur trees cover the landscape. As with the Cockscomb several animal species and habitat reserve including again the jaguar, cougar and a small population of crocodiles.
The mountain pine reserve is also the location of the tallest waterfall in Belize in all the Central America. Hidden Valley falls drops 1600 feet and looks as though it’s swallowed by the forest at its base. Big Rock and Butterfly falls are two underwater falls sites to the whole and the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. The Rio Frio cave located in the Mountain Pine Reserve has the largest entrance of any cave in Belize. In fact, Belize is an ideal location for the formation of caves.
And most caves are found extensive stalactites and stalagmite formations and pottery chards as well as of the ancient mine path. In others maybe found human remains or underground waterfalls. The Belize barrier reef is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world with 500 species of fish and over 100 species of coral making it an ideal diving location. Ninety percent of the reef has not been researched and therefore many more species could be waiting to be discovered. The barrier reef is one of many UNESCO world heritage sites located in Belize.
The Great blue Hole is an underwater sink hole that lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef named one of the best scuba diving sites in the world by Jack Gusto, the whole measures over 1000 feet across and 400 feet deep.
