The Mayan built huge ceremonial areas most of which were astronomically aligned, many of these sites still exists today. Hi, I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re looking at the Mayan sights in Belize.
The Mayan civilization is historically significant for many reasons and its down for our remains a mystery. The civilization was one of the most impressive in history, occupying Central and South America for approximately 200 BC to 1500 AD.
The culture covered parts of what is now Mexico and El Salvador while almost all of Guatemala and beliefs were inhabited. Most Mayan are topic’s God, rulers, heroes, religious scenes and daily life. The pieces that survived today for the most part of itinerary and ritual objects, the Maya are known for the use of jade, obsidian and succor. Mayan architecture is as unique as Greek and Roman Architecture, the most recognizable symbols of the Maya are the step to pyramids. Their architecture is amazing for several reasons most importantly for their probable luck of the technology needed to build such structures.
The lack of medal tools, police and perhaps even the wheel would have been problematic and therefore huge sources of man power would have been necessary. It is estimated the police was once home to over one million line people. With many sides pretty coast the country the impressive works of the ancient mines continue to live a mark and beliefs, even centuries after the civilizations collapsed.
Caracol is located in Western Belize near the border with Guatemala and the foot hills of the Mayan mountains. Discover the 1937 Ancient Caracol was one of the largest Mayan Cities covering 65 square miles. This site was occupied as early as 1200 BC but limped its greatest period of construction between 485 and 889 AD.
Xunantunich is another important Mayan site. The name means “stone women” in the Mayan Language. This secluded site can only be reach by a ferry over the Mopan River.
The second tallest structure in Belize is the Pyramid El Castillo at 130 feet high located in Xunantunich. This structure dominates the landscaped and it’s without doubt one of Belize’s most impressive places to visit. El Castillo is known for its freeze which is one time ran on the entire structure. This taco decoration is located on the East side of the lower temple. From the top tourist can reserve thick jungles stretching west and the Mayan language to the South. Wrapping around El Castillo west and north side is the border of Guatemala.
Lamanai is one of the few mine sites whose original name is known. The translation is “submerged crocodile” which explains the various representations of crocodiles at the site. Lamanai was occupied continuously for over 300 years until 650 AD. The site today is home to an abundance of wildlife including a growing number of holler monkeys.
