Raena Morgan: Dr. Thompson, is it true that 60% more women have strokes than men?
Dr. Owen Thompson: It is true.
Raena Morgan: I don’t want to believe that.
Dr. Owen Thompson: If —well, it may be because they do a better job of staying alive longer.
Raena Morgan: Oh, okay.
Dr. Owen Thompson: Of all the strokes, for ever hundred strokes, approximately 60% are in women and 40% are in men. And there are a lot of debates among experts as to why that is. One of the obvious reasons would be that if women live longer, as we get older, we’re more likely to get strokes. And if men die younger, it’s pretty hard to have one if you’re not alive. So, there may be some other, other issues as well, but about 700,000 people will have a stroke in the United States at any given year. And about 115,000 will die from this disease, Raena. So, it is a major health risk, problem in the United States. It’s the number one disabler in the United States of adults. So, stroke is a really, really big deal. And, again, it does affect women more than men.
