Now, the question comes you know Bruce we love the sound of all that. But man how do we get pass that price? I mean is there any alternatives out there. And you know they are. There are alternatives to exchange server. And the one I’m going to talk about today is a company that makes a product called Kerio. I don’t want to use the word exchanget—they’ve done a very, very nice job with Kerio making it number one multi platform capable. So it works very nicely with Windows with Outlook, there’s a connector for Outlook and by the way, Outlook will think is talking to exchange server.
It works nicely with the Maxel for using address book—apple mail, it works very nicely with that, it works very nicely with thunder bird, it works nicely with Linux. So, it’s kinda of a class plus platform application that replicates many, many of the features that exchange has to offer. So number one, it’s Windows; you can install on red hot Linux—the Mac. Mac OS X, you actually install the server on any of those. You don’t necessarily need windows server, you can install it on a XP machine, you can install it on a Window server 2003 Vista in server non-server editions. There’s a Outlook connector so that Outlook things is running an exchange server that all comes with it. There’s a really great administrative tools on there, you can have your disk it could be used in groups, it’s everything like you would have it exchange. And it comes with mobile e-mail and its supports natively pushing e-mail to the palm trio Windows mobile black berry, small phone so you have all of that as well.
There’s building in a various protection into this thing. I think you can use and you can get a vast AVG all that sort of thing with Kerio, it’s got user spam assassin for a spam detecting and catching spam which is an excellent, excellent open source spam application. It has your built-in countering, group countering collaboration tools. So it will work very nicely with Outlook, Microsoft entourage for the Mac, I tell all those things are going to work really, really nicely as well as it has Zone Webmail client.
Kerio is quite a bit less money, a 10 user version with one year of kespersky and our various protections it’s like 599 bucks. Without the kespersky, it is 499 for that in 10 user. Compare that to $500.00, compare it to $1,400 that is huge, huge savings and you’re getting pretty much a cone of exchange.
Done a lot of research on Kerio, we don’t use it here again, I use exchange but they just release on October the 21st the version 6.6 and I am reading a lot of good, good things about Kerio. And I think if you’re looking into an e-mail server if you’re not starting out with small business server okay, and you’re looking getting that first server maybe we’re going to put it in the Windows 2008 server to act your directory and all that. Consider and test Kerio before you commit to exchange. You may find that will be just fine. Now if you’re in a multi platform office, you’re running that PC’s, I really think at this point Kerio is pretty much a no brainer.
