Equipment News
Male: Hello and welcome to Golf A Lot Equipment News where we review the
Wilson Staff Di9 Iron with a heritage that includes over 16 major
championship victories Wilson clearly know a thing or two about creating
irons. The Wilson Staff Di9 Iron is an updated version of the popular Di7
model and Wilson promise that increase distance accuracy and feel
combine to meet the Di9 one of their best performing irons yet.
One of the most welcome developments in the Di9 is the reintroduction of
the white tip shaft technology that was used in the old deep red irons.
Wilson claims to have improved it even more for the Di9s and here to
explain more are Padraig Harrington and Bob Therman Wilson’s Global
head of research and development.
Padraig: The Di9 includes Wilson patented wide tip technology. This prevents
twisting on off center hits and delivers more club head speed.
Bob: Well I have hit it 180 winds, I’m going to— they’re making me look good
these irons.
Male: The Di9’s club head feature a low profile wide sole design that promotes a
higher and straighter ball flight as well as generating much higher ball
speeds from the alter response of club face. The end result is consistently
better distance. Study show that almost 85% of shots are hit from the
center to the 2 of the club and the Di9’s feature a cavity that helps to
extend the sweet spot out towards the tube.
Pardaig: Incorporating a soft urethane insert into the heel of the club widens the
switch body even further.
Bob: When I look at it I see forgiveness. Oh cut that bit in the toe. It works just
the same.
Pardaig: It also serves as a shock trap that reduce the vibrations that travel through
the hosel of the club into your hands.
Male: In our test we felt that the clubs were very good and certainly describe
confidence at address. The cavity back in the head decreases in size as you
go down the set or some may not like the protruding cavity that you can
see on the 4 and 5 irons. The sand iron was a little chunky and more
rectangular than normal but it did the job pretty well. If it’s not for you
then the excellent Wilson Staff TW90 Sand Wedge can be swapped in
throughout the set the Di9’s are easy to hit and this is particularly
noticeable in the longer irons where you can achieve impressive distance
and ball flight almost effortlessly.
They are also very consistent on almost every shot even on miss hits fast
so that white tip shaft and that forgiving head. The Di9 iron’s feature a
true temper flake steel shaft that Wilson claim is suitable for players of all
abilities and we’d agree unless you have a very high swing speeds.
They’re also available with a new Pro Force V2 graphite shaft with a
softer tip for those golfers who need a bit more help for those golfers you
need a bit more help for getting the ball airborne.
Overall the Di9 certainly impressed us with their great performance and
for mid to high handicappers we think that they represent one of the best
value for money sets of irons in the market. Well that’s all for now so for
