Male: Hello and welcome to Golf A Lot Equipment News where we review the
Wilson Staff Smooth Driver. Wilson says the smooth driver’s classic
cleaning loops have been inspired by the sleek uninterrupted lines of
today’s high performance sports cars and it’s easy to see where they’re
coming from. Wilson has combined the classy exterior of the 460 cc head
with their own performance technology on the inside. The smooth driver
uses Wilson’s own variable thickness design in the club face to deliver a
sweet spot that is twice as large as normal.
The smooth also features a unique internal weight positioning design. The
moves the weight back as the loft of the driver increases. This means that
each of the available lofts 9, 10.5 and 12 degrees offer the maximum
stability to optimize the launch conditions that best suite your swing. The
Wilson Staff Smooth also offers the Fujikura E-Fit Shaft System allowing
you to match your swing to the correct shaft. Here’s Bob Thurman Global
Head of Research and Development at Wilson to explain.
Bob: To make sure that this driver works for every player, we match specific
lofts and specific shaft designs. Lower lofts were matched with a stiffer,
heavier Fujikura shaft for more boring trajectory.
Male: Oh it’s a very nice flight. It doesn’t balloon at all. This is nice.
Male: The ball is coming off with low spin, which obviously is good. I mean that
means the shaft is good.
Bob: In a higher loft of club heads we move away further back and combine this
with a more lighter flexible shaft to help get the ball airborne faster.
Male: There is no doubt that the smooth is a modern looking driver that
combines a feeling of power with a more traditional understated design
but it was maybe a little too rounded for us looks of course aren’t
everything and in our test we felt that the smooth driver performed very
well and delivered in all the imports in areas of distance, consistency and
forgiveness. Make sure you get the right shaft loft combination from the
Fujikura E-Fit Shaft System because that will have a significant effect on
the height of your trajectory.
Given how forgiving how the driver was, we wondered if it would be as
workable as some of the rival drivers end at the better players but again
the Wilson Staff Smooth performed very well and all the options for
moving the ball right or left off the tee are available. We couldn’t really
fault the performance of the smooth and most golfers would find that this
club rarely let’s them down. It is however up against some stiff
competition in the center and is maybe missing a little of the wow factor to
make it stand out. However the Wilson Staff Smooth is a quality driver for
all levels of player with a reasonable price tag. And if you like a more
traditional shape driver then you will go far wrong with this club.
Well that’s all for now, so for more information on the Wilson Staff
smooth and to compare prices from all the major retailers please visit our
