So the first step is getting your media into Windows Moviemaker. Now if you recorded on a DV camcorder, you actually going to have to plug your camera into your computer and then play back the footage while your computer records the files on to the hard drive. So the way to do that is to connect the camera probably with FireWire and then power it into VTR or VCR mode. So it is turned on and you have got it plugged in.
The next step is to go file, capture video and then you are going to sleek your device, I have got a Sony camera and I pressed next and then you name the file, so I am going to call it abstractor for home and press next, now this step is kind of important, up here you have a couple of choices, the best quality to play for playback on my computer is actually going to compress the footage into really small videos, so they do not really take up much space but once you have compressed you can not make them bigger. You have to recapture in order to make them larger.
The next choice is the digital device format (DV-AVI), this is like the full uncompressed movie file. So if you are recording this, it takes 13 Gigs per hour of video of disc space. That is quite a bit of space but it is worth it if you have this space. So I am going to choose that and I am going to the next and then we are going to capture parts of the tape manually. You could capture the entire tape but if there is extra footage on it you do not want to do that. So you make sure you show preview during capture and then go next and then we will get a little window here, a preview window. So if I press play, then I am actually playing the camcorder footage on the computer. So I queue this up, I can use the fast forward or rewind button down here to get it queued up to where I want it and let us say I want to capture right now, I pressed stop. So once I am queued up, I am going to press start capture up here and it will begin playing back and my hard drive is actually recording this footage. So I just want to capture a few seconds, let us say and then press stop capture and now I have recorded one clip. I could go on and fast forward and queue up to another spot in this tape that I want to capture and press start and stop capture and you can do that as many times as you need to until you have captured all the footage of the tape that you want.
Once you are done you just press finish and then it usually takes a second for a clip to process and it has appeared in our collections bin, abstractor for home. Here is the clip, I can preview it here and we are ready to move on to the next step.
