Many places across the North East had a pretty tough winter. We had very warm conditions in December and January and then all of a sudden it got really cold without a lot of snow cover. Then it has snowed. And a lot of plants ended up with, somewhat we call, winter burn.
This is an inkberry plant and it is not suppose to look like this. look at the color, it is just black and yellow. And this took a big hit in the winter. What happened was is that all the snow here reflected the light up and burned these leaves. The good thing is the plant is not dead. Do not rip this out. what will happen is, as the leaves over time are going to fall off in the next few weeks. And then this plant is going to leaf out again. You can tell that it is healthy by just sort of doing a scratch test. Again, if you scratch bark here, it is nice, it is green. It is very healthy and that is an indication that this plant is not dead. It is just damaged.
This is a honey made holly and again, it is not suppose to look like this. But one of the things I can do, you scratch it, you can test it. If you cut it open it looks fairly nice and green inside it. It is probably going to be okay. We will have to wait a little bit to see whether or not we have damage. I know the plant is still alive because way down here, it looks fine. That is what it is suppose to look like. So at the very least, this may have lost the top part and then it will flash out some new growth from underneath,
This is one rhododendron plant. Half of it looks great and half looks absolutely horrible. These leaves will probably end up not making it. But if you look closely here these buds here seem to be okay to me. I have checked them, they are fairly plumped. They are not dried out. I think the operative word here is patience.
This particular plant is a sky pencil holly. It is beautiful, it is very close to the house. So that has an essence, protected this throughout the winter. Another Sky Pencil Holly does not look like anything like the first one I just showed you a couple of seconds ago. First of all, all the leaves in this are just going to come right off over the next couple of weeks. You can cut it and take a look in it. It is green underneath there but be patient. We do not know yet what this, exactly how much damage they did sustain. But we do know this, it is going to loose all its leaves.
