Lynn Thompson: Baby, it's cold outside and the low temperatures, low humidity and harsh winds can wreak havoc on our skin. What to do?
Eleanor Langston: It is very important to follow a good daily skincare routine and follow simple steps to make it the best that it can be.
Lynn Thompson: For starters, check your temp, use lukewarm water while washing your hands or taking showers, hot water depletes the skin of moisture, and stick with soap free cleansers. Next, keep a good 24-hour hydrating moisturizer nearby and use it every single day, after every hand wash and shower, it works best while your skin is damp and make sure it has sun protection.
Eleanor Langston: You should a 24-hour hydrating moisturizer that not only soothes dry skin but also protects it from UVA and UVB damage. In the winter your skin is exposed to the sun on a daily basis and that kind of incidental sun exposure can add up over time and damage the skin.
Lynn Thompson: Yes, even in the winter months, all the year around, sun protection is the most important step for healthy skin. Aveeno has a daily moisturizing lotion with SPF 15 that has oatmeal formula to relieve and prevent dry skin. It also has broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection to protect against sun damage.
Eleanor Langston: It's a great idea to exfoliate on a biweekly or weekly basis.
Lynn Thompson: And don't forget your lips.
Eleanor Langston: Lips have very few oil glands so they need extra attention.
Lynn Thompson: Here's a trick, apply a little petroleum jelly, then brush them in a circular motion with your toothbrush to exfoliate and leave them soft and supple and always use a lip balm.
Other tips, sleep with a humidifier in the room and keep your door closed to lock in moisture, drink plenty of water throughout the day and before heading out --
Eleanor Langston: You should pay extra attention to your hands and your face before going out. So lather extra moisturizer on before bundling up.
Lynn Thompson: Now you are ready to face winter head on. In New York, I am Lynn Thompson.
