So you have gone a little bit too long without blowing out your sprinklers and now there is ice in the lines so how do you know that there is ice in the lines? You probably hooked up the compressor to the line and you went to push air through and the compressor pressure was not going down and your sprinkler heads were not popping up. That generally means that you have got ice in your sprinkler lines.
So what should you do about it? Well if the weather is a little bit warmer, if it is above freezing, you still have the option. Sometimes air would not push through the ice but water might help actually melt the ice so one option is to turn on the water and turn on each sprinkler line and see if you can get water to go through and sometimes that will break up the ice and you will be in business.
Other times, that does not work for you. Sometimes you will have to take a torch to the copper pipe where your main line comes in to your sprinkler system and you will have to warm up the water gradually, do not put too much heat on the line, that would not be good but just warm up the copper gradually and see if the warm water can melt the ice in the lines and then once you do, once you are successful in getting the water to go through the lines, what you want to do is just go ahead and blow your sprinkler lines like normal.
So if you have left your lines a little bit too late and you need a solution, give that a try.
