Hello woodworking friends! We’re going to show you how to rip wood on the table saw on the safest man possible. First I compare three types of common push sticks and see advantages and disadvantages of this one. And then demonstrate which type of push stick is the safest of all.
We have three different types of push sticks, coming town in woodworking shop. We’re going to our lessons to see the most common variety when comes across. The one in the middle which is usually called push block and sometimes also use in a table saw. And then the last one that arise that has other features engineered to the design. Okay so let’s see how they use each one and then you promised that may come up.
This push stick works but pressing the wood into the notch, on the front and pushing forward. Men come here as the wood is actually loose between the fences and saw blade. We’ll she went cutting short boards.
Here, we see at the backend of the saw blade can actually lift the wood off the table. This situation has potential catch—so this is really not a safe situation. Now let’s look up close and see how the wood could come away from the fence. This happens the other side of the wood can actually touch the backend of the saw blade and be thrown, so really there are several disadvantages in this type of push stick.
Let’s be fair, this push stick works fine in all boards. This is the only push stick that you have, please used it because any push stick is better than none at all. Now this push stick which is more caught a push block uses a friction pad to push the wood through. Well there are three mains issues here. First of all, you can see that your hand is way to close to the blade until you feel safe. And I don’t think that you can either see here, but as the wood is cut in a stealing saw, you would notice on your wood, your friction pad would have any grip at all. And last you can see that there is no notch or step at the back the push block. There’s really no way to grab the end of the board. So it’s really no recommended to use a push block here.
This ergonomic design has several features that no one increases the safety level but also greater reducing the anxiety when you’re ripping wood. First you notice your height of your hand above the surface. This is a full point and this completely changes the anxiety level. Let’s say that there's 80% of the anxiety is reduced. We’re completely done. Second notice the large body the push stick, this prevent your hand from being poured down whether a loose sleeve or whatever. This is also another anxiety reducer.
Also the other side of the push stick is on top the wood, this prevent us from lifting up and also keeps the wood against the fence at the same time as you push forward. Now look at this old fashion handsaw handle grip. This ergonomic design intensionally gives you arm position. It’s greatest strength to push forward.
Okay now let’s look at the traction tread. This is actually a tread. It looks like just like a tread on a farmer’s tractor. The vision is that it help us accumulates to get traps in between the chevron so it doesn’t use its friction grip on the wood. You’re kind of see a philosophy as a core tire.
Last the most important the square pen here isn’t an ordinary push pen. It’s actually retractable and spring loaded. In other words, you can slide up and temporarily hide inside the body of the push stick. This feature is so important for safe and proper ripping on table saw that we made a second video just to demonstrate situations on the table saw, which is feature indispensable. So now please go to our short video number two to see how this works or check out the website. Thanks for watching.
