This is Harry. He is a 3-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever. We do very versatile dog, we do confirmation, we do obedience, we do a rally. We’ve started some agility, we do a little bit of tracking and fieldwork as well and he enjoys the lakes. He is not much of a swimming pool dog. He enjoys lakes or rivers. He is on the outdoor dog but it is almost it’s just instinct. The first time I took him out, he was 4 months old. It’s almost like he knew what to do. We had small pigeons and some dogs and he just want nuts as soon as you saw him pop around, he want nuts. He was all excited. He knew what he was supposed to do. That was the neat thing about it.
He’s undergoing training right now. We’re doing some field work and training and take him out and get him maybe a narrow title or a junior honor title with AKC. They are wonderful pets, small children, you have to watch this because you might have jumping as an issue and they don’t realize that they’re big but they are wonderful family pets. They are loyal, they are dependable, they are not snappy, they can put up with kids pulling ears or tails. They are always willing to play a game—tennis or play ball or anything. Love swimming pool, baby wading pools is our big hits to throwing balls and stuff in the pools.
They are just all around good family pets. They’re clean. The short hair, you don’t have the breeding or you don’t have the grooming issues that you have at some of the longer hair pets. You do have shedding couples of times a year in there. Labrador’s known as chewers when they are younger. A lot of times a lab rescue, that’s one of the reasons why the dogs are returned into lab rescue as digging and chewing but it’s just kind of something you live with.
If you keep them busy when they’re puppies, they usually don’t have time to get into trouble. They need the job so either obedience, confirmation, some type of training, even walks out in the desert, out in your neighborhood. But yeah, I've gone through labradors eating siding on the house, numerous garden hoses, things taking out the doggy door and you’ll find them a week later out in the backyard somewhere that they decide having Labradors. Sometimes, they’ll retrieve sprinklers when they are on and bring them in the doggy door into the house.
