Why is that to speak Yiddish, to speak Jewish, to speak Hebrew? What are the differences in between them?
Well the first language was Hebrew. Hebrew was a language of the Hebrew bible. It is a part of the King in night, family of languages. Language of the Hebrew bible, although there are few other words known language is in the Hebrew bible and then it was the phrases of the book of the Mishna, which is kind of find in 220.
And there after when the Romans concurred the Jews, the Jews was scattered. It is the Hebrews ties to be a spoken language, but remain the reaching language of the Jewish people for the holy literature. So for (foreign language) writing in the Mishna and Tolera in 1135 to 1204 that is book in Hebrew. It was the book of the language of the prayer book. It is just a few prayers and the prayer books that Aramaic which was the language of the Jews, who wrote in the Talmud after the Mishna. And there are many languages of the Jews who spoke, but they always write the Hebrew bible. They prayed in Hebrew and it is really the riches of language. In fact as I said in the other video, if you want to guaranty that Jews somewhat who read what you write a thousand years from now, the only language you can be sure that real is Hebrew.
If you can be sure with anything because other of the language we speak, when I spoke in English for a short time and world history for example. Then what happen was in the 19 century, this fellow named Eliezer Ben-Yehuda was the really chief figure, the revival of the Modern Hebrew language. He published the dictionary of the Hebrew language there was actually debate in Israel is to watch the language should be and they finally decided of course in Hebrew and what you have the nation, you have to have a language with a lot of words and so of the vocabulary is becoming rich and now with spoken language.
Now, what is Yiddish? Well Yiddish is a different situation. A little over century ago, people do not speak any Hebrew in conversation. The language of your open Jew was Yiddish. The Hebrew word for Jew in Yiddish is Yed and that is why people would say I want to speak in Yiddish, I speak in Jewish, but it is not speaking Jewish, they are speaking Yiddish.
Therefore, main components in Yiddish, Hebrew of course in the letter of Yiddish or Hebrew letters, where as the combination of all French and all Italian, German and Slavic. But 85% of the vocabulary of the German of Yiddish is in German words. And the basic Yiddish structure follow German, but of course you are going to use Hebrew’s letters.
Just spoke Yiddish in countries basically where just got the (foreign language). Polish and Rome and Russian just spoke Yiddish, but the majority of Yiddish 19 century French and German spoke French and German because they had the rights.
I think about this number is the 1920, Yiddish newspapers publish in New York not more than 200, 000 copies daily. In fact one of the main Jewish newspapers in America today, the forward which is the weekly is in English that use to be the forbid and it was the prominent Yiddish newspaper.
And other else where, we have videos with Yiddish, but I just want to give you a little background on the different in between Hebrew and Yiddish and of course the holy language of Judaism is Hebrew. The language still with the bible, the language of the prayer book, they do not like to use Hebrew in fact the common language in Judaism today is Yiddish. Still in the home because they want to reserve Hebrew that are possible for holy purposes.
