Yoga For Geeks

Male: Well technology sure has made a lot of things easy as far as a workplace but it also adds a lot of stress as far as sitting in front of the computer for thoroughly eight hours a day. What do you do to stretch out and relieve that stress? Well one thing is yoga. We’ve got Kevin Royes and Kevin want to talk a program called Yoga For Geeks, essentially for geeks like me who sit in front of that crazy computer screen all day. Kevin Royes: Yeah. Male: What is behind that? Kevin Royes: Well Yoga For Geeks was started by a woman; Sarah Pullman and you know, Sarah has a lot of friends in the technology field about a computer programmers and a—so she though it would be a good idea to develop yoga principles and exercises that are helpful more particularly to someone who is sitting in the computer all day. Things that affect your posture, you know you are typing all day, hand with th mouse all day. That type of thing. Male: Well let’s have a look at some of these moves to maybe take some of this pain away from me. Kevin Royes: Yeah I am pretty sure. Okay well, what I would suggest is we start out by standing up. You know and if we think about, you know say sitting at a desk for a long period of time, sort of stresses that are happening on your hands maybe, using the mouse but also particularly on your back and I don’t know that you but I have some lower back problems and sometimes it feels good to stretch out so, one main thing with yoga. Breath and move at the same time and then you’re doing yoga and that is very important part of it. But something is simple as getting up from your desk and just. Male: I feel much better already. Kevin Royes: Here it gets better from here. And so just—you know imagine your standing beside your desk and just you know, you just inhale, just sort of like expand yourself a bit. Try not to look too new agey but just exhale and just like forward full and just hang over. Yeah, yeah, it does not matter how far you go. Male: It’s hurting. It’s hurting Kevin. And this is going to cure me? Kevin Royes: I don’t know if it will cure, it will definitely help though. Male: So Kevin I—I can see where you’re coming from here but I got to tell you, you look like way cooler than I do right now. I can’t even touch the ground. So what about clothing and stuff like that? Obviously I am busy guy, do you recommend people getting in to the yoga pose and stuff? Kevin Royes: If you’re going to a studio for sure because hands that are stretch here and shorts that are stretch here will allow for movement when you’re going into say, wider leg moves but I mean like the idea of yoga for geeks is just you just get up from your desk and you can just start stretching. So, we would have people in here in their jeans and t-shirts and when they are done, they go back to work. So you know, you just need to be able to move and be able to stretch. Yeah so— Male: I don’t think I have stretched for several years. It might take me a while but for companies, would you go into company and do this? Like is that what you recommend having them bring someone in? Kevin Royes: For sure yeah. There’s a—lots of companies that you know, will have different types of programs but you know I was teaching over on the north shore at a company that—two days a week and that is what they offer. They offered yoga for their employees. Male: And how long does that take? Two-hour class? Kevin Royes: An hour-long class. Male: Hour long, it’s what you recommend? Kevin Royes: In studios, usually they are an hour and a half but a lot of people, they are too busy for an hour and a half before in the after. So I think an hour is a solid amount of time to get a little good practicing and I think part of what she is doing is getting it out of the being too new agey and it’s just anyone can do it. It’s just breathing and it calms your mind and you come back to work feeling refreshed. And it just takes a minute, two minutes, three minutes a day. Just get out from your desk and just you know, as long as you are breathing and stretching, you’re doing yoga just move with your breath and you’re doing yoga. It does not need to be any big endeavor. Male: It sounds like a scam to me because that’s—just bring the move so, literally for a just a few hundred dollars a week, you know, have someone come in for a couple times and doing it. Kevin Royes: For sure, yeah those teacher for hire and they do a corporate programs like that and most of those teachers will work out the studios as well around the city, so very reputable and— Male: And your employees will feel theoretically a lot better. Kevin Royes: Yeah. They are supposed to. Male: Except me because I got to go to the chiropractor now, you know after today but— Kevin Royes: But yeah, yeah that simple. Male: Well great.
