Your Privacy After Giving Birth

Rose: Hi! I am Rose from Elk River, Minnesota. After the birth of our first child, we had a lot of visitors to the hospitals but I am wondering what is the best way to tell our family and friends that we'd like a little privacy and personal time to enjoy the birth of our second child by ourselves?

Phil Rutter: So Rose it does sound like you really want to make sure that you have that time to bond with your new arrival and that makes perfect sense. And I think that if you phrase it that way, but also phrase that you know that your family wants to be involved at some point in joining in the celebration of your new child, your second child. So I think that both can happen. And I think what would make sense is to talk with your husband about ways to maybe send out an invitation for a separate party a couple of weeks after your child is born, and that will allow you and your husband and your first child to all get together and enjoy this new arrival and have that privacy that you are seeking but also be respectful of your family and friends that really want to share in this.

So I think it could be a win-win and I think if you go about this as saying and acknowledging that they want to share this excitement I think they will respect your wishes to have two weeks to bond with your child and I think it will go well. I think if you take that approach I think it will be very positive.
