Hi, I am Craig from connexted.com. It is the 29th of May and welcome to Making Websites Betterer.
Last week, we talked about passion in your business. Today, I want to talk about the purpose of your business. If you do not have a clear purpose for your business, if it is all about for making money, then everyone really gets ripped off. Because the customers are served to the best of your ability and you can be just chasing the money all the time rather than really going out there and trying to create something great, something that will last the ages in a real business. It is just another form of a get rich quick scheme. So how do we work out without purposes, the reason for your company’s existence beyond making money.
To define out purpose, we have to maybe think a little bit differently, you need to find the underlying reason for your existence beyond products that would just keep you going for 100, 200, 500 years long after you are going what is your company really exist to do. Okay, maybe a couple of examples will help us. For example my business, I aimed to help business earners like yourself improve their businesses and their lives. So, at the moment, I am helping you improve your website and giving you ideas and that kind of thing. But, if the internet disappeared, the purpose of my business will still exist. I change the strategy of how I help business earners but I keep my co-purpose of what I am actually doing.
Some excellent re-earners is Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras. They follow companies like Disney. The purpose of Disney is not to make cartoons or theme parks. The purpose is to put a smile on a child’s face and so entertaining children is really their purpose that they look by, how they do that can change, but what they do will always remain the same. And as an important note is your purpose does not have to be unique either. Lots of companies will probably share your purpose, it is just how you execute it, that is going to be the difference. You do not have to worry about some competitive advantage.
The bottom line is working out what the purpose of your business as a whole because that really underlies everything and you need to be very clear about that when you are making decisions.
Okay, that was it for today. I hope you have learned something. I hope that was kind of clear. Feel free to leave comments, questions, email me whatever you want.
Okay I am Craig from connexted.com. I will see you soon. Bye.
