Bridget Snapp: So you’re a football player, soccer, baseball. Today’s show is about Taekwondo. It not for you right? Not so fast.
When you think of performance training, you probably think of high intensity drills like plyometrics or sprints but what about martial arts? Today were here at karate for kids talking with head instructor, Bryan Poole about some Taekwondo moves that can help any athletes.
Bryan Poole: Mr. Devin is a student of ours. He’s a green belt and he’s going to help me demonstrate a couple of the techniques. Generally in classes, we start with the warm up, a basic get the heart rate going, a little bit of sweat going sop we don’t injure our muscles. So let’s have Devin. Let’s put our arms up to the side and we’re going to give me five forward circles. Ready, go.

Okay, let’s go a double shoulder with the part, leg stretch, reach down. There you go the legs nice and straight.

And walk them in. great job. Let’s go black belt set. Okay, now we’re going to work on some basic pad drills, okay. So, Mr. Devin, we’re going to do our basic jump, two feet out. We’re going to start here. We’re going to go all the way done and back, keep up on the jump. Ready go. And back a little bit faster for me. Give me a high five; great job Mr. Devin, fantastic.
Now this time, what I want you to do, we’re going to jump up to the pad level, one, and jump up and jump up here and then back, okay. All right, Devin let’s do it up to level one, middle stance punch, level two, aim faster, level three—there you go, turn around. We’re going to start at level one. Let me hear a loud cry.
Level two, two punches, there you go, last one fast. One, two, three and set, yes sir, give me a high five, great job, sir.
Okay, now we’re going to work on some basic punches. Okay, in a lot of times in classes, Mr. Devin, he’ll come up here, sir. We use different color pads to help the students focused. So we’re going to step back and cry for me. Okay, Mr. Devin you’re going to demonstrate the punches when I call the color red, blue, you’re going to punch that pad. So step back and—let’s get a little closer for me. Okay, ready blue, the red, blue, blue, blue—[Demonstration].
Excellent and a black belt set. High five, great job Mr. Devin. Excellent, okay now, we’re going to demonstrate just a couple of the basic tips. Mr. Devin’s going to demonstrate a round kick and kicks on the pads in the help or strengthen our legs flexibility as well as the coordination. So not just for martial arts but any athlete can benefit from martial arts training.
So Devin, let’s step back and—okay, lets switch fee. Okay, on my—we’re going to take a round kick on the blue pad. Ready?—
Excellent! Watch ion the blue, a little higher for me. Excellent! The last one, make it loud and black belt set.
Okay, now we’re going to put them together. We’re going to do punch-punch and a round kick. Are you ready sir?
Devin: Yes, sir.
Bryan Poole: Step back and—show me punch-punch, round kick. Good. Two more, ready, punch-punch, round kick. Last one, your best, ready, punch-punch, round kick and return to set and bow, great job Mr. Devin.
Bridget Snapp: All right, we’re about to wrap it up here but not before I break a board.
