Bridget Snapp: So you’re a football player, soccer, baseball. Today’s show is about Taekwondo. It’s not for you right? Not so fast.
When you think of performance training, you probably think of high intensity drills, like plyometrics or sprints but what about martial arts? Today, we’re here at Karate for Kids, talking with head instructor Brian Poole about some Taekwondo moves that can help any athletes.
Brian Poole: Mr. Dobbin is a student of ours. He’s a green belt and he’s going to help me demonstrate a couple of the techniques. Jean only in classes, we start with the warm up. Basic, get the heart rate going, little bit of slight going so we don’t in-draw our muscles.
So let’s have Devin. Let’s put our arms up to the side and we’re going to give me five forward circuits, ready go hana, dool, set, net, tasut, yasut, Ilgope, yaudul. Okay, let’s go double shoulder with the part, like stretch switch down, there you go. Your legs nice and straight, hana, dool, set, net, tasut, yasut, ilgope, yaudul and walk them in, great job. Let’s go black belt set.
Okay now, we’re going to work on some basic pad drills, okay. So Mr. Devin we’re going to do our basic jump, two feet jump. We’re going to start here. We’re going to go all the way down and back, key up if you want to jump, ready go. And back a little bit back faster for me, give me a high five, great job Mr. Devin, fantastic.
Now, this time what I want you to do, we’re going to jump up to the pad level one, jump up and jump up here and then back. Alright Devin let’s do up to level one, middle stunt punch, level two in faster, level three, there you go, turn around. We’re going to start level one, let me heard loud, level two, two punches, there you go, last one fast, one, two, three and yes sir. Give me a high five, great job sir.
Now, we’re going to work on some basic punches. Okay and a lot of times in classes, Mr. Devin, please come up here sir, we use different color pads to help the students focus. So we’re going to step back in and kick out for me. Okay, Mr. Devin, you’re going to demonstrate the punches when I call the red, blue, you’re going to punch that pad. So step back on, let’s get a closer for me. Okay, ready, good, red, blue, blue, blue, red, blue, red, blue, red. That’s how to win a black belt sir. High five, great job Mr. Devin, excellent.
Okay now, we’re going to demonstrate just a couple of the basic kicks. Mr. Devin is going to demonstrate a round kick and kicks on the pads tend to help us strengthening the legs, flexibility as well as the coordination. So not just for martial arts but any athletes can benefit for martial arts training.
So Devin, let’s step back, screwed up a little bit for me sir, ok lets switch feet , ok on my key out we’re going to kick out, round kick on the blue pad ready that’s right ready watch the blue with a higher for me excellent last one make it loud and block up set. Ok now we are going to put them together we’re going to do punch, punch and round kick. Are you ready sir? Step back in your, show me punch, punch round kick. Good two more ready punch, punch, round kick. Last one your best ready, punch, punch, round kick and we’re turn to set and bow. Great job Mr. Devin.
