Hi, I'm Tamra Davis and today on this episode I'm going to make a ginger bread people. And thanks to Samsung I'm going to be using their new stove which is really energy efficient. During the holiday season my kids like to give their teacher a Christmas present so I thought this would be a really cute idea. I'm going to make the ginger bread people here and then I'm going to take them home and the kids are going to decorate them and they can bring them to their teacher.
These are so fun to make, so it’s a really great project to do on a rainy day or a day that it’s cold. It’s a fun art project too because after you’ve cooked them, the kids have so much fun decorating them.
The first thing, I’d like to do is put everything into the Cuisinart to blend everything. So I put on stick of butter in. It’s already been pre-soften. You can also use margarine, half a cup of sugar, and a quarter cup of honey. So it’s really good to use honey because it’s provides a natural antiseptic and this really, I believe helps keep the flu and keep the cold away from my kids.
Try to get a local honey, I use a quarter cup of dark molasses. This is what really gives the ginger bread cookies that rich flavor. Two and a half cups of flour, whenever you’re working with flour and you want to try to make your recipe a little more healthy, you can use whole wheat flour but only substitute one quarter of the amount with whole wheat flour.
So in this I'm going to use two cups of regular white flour and a half of cup of whole wheat flour. Two teaspoons of ground ginger, one teaspoon of baking soda and a quarter teaspoon of salt. First, we’re going to mix all of the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl for our Cuisinart. If your mixture doesn’t come together add a tablespoon of ice water, that looks pretty well, actually you don’t even need the water.
After everything, is all mixed together wrap this in wax paper and put it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. So, this is the first time I'm using this oven so let's see how easy it is to use. It looks like all you need to do is push the thing big, let’s see, there, perfect, baked and it’s at 350. I want it higher 375 and set start, okay perfect that’s easy, awesome.
Roll out the dough between two pieces of saran wrap or wax paper. Those should be like a quarter inch thick. Cut out the ginger bread people. In addition to using the ginger bread cut out, I also like using some other animals that I found. And you can pick up this like in a store or also they sell them on eBay a lot of vintage cookie cutters are also in the market, we can put that into cookie cutters, it’s so cute. It’s supposed to cook between eight to 10 minutes, so I'm going to just do eight minutes and then check it because we don’t want them over cooked.
So this really depends on your oven, the Samsung oven is very efficient. Let it cool before decorating. They're still soft when they come out of the oven. I think it will be good. I like to mix powdered sugar with a little water and that makes some icing. If you want you can add food coloring to make different colors, then set out your decorations, put out little bowls with different candies, raisins, nuts anything you like that you want the kids to decorate with. I put the ginger bread on a piece of wax paper and have the kids write their names and then they decorated their ginger bread.
It takes about 20 minutes for the frosting to set and then you can enjoy them. Then the kids wrapped up their ginger bread and each made a little present for their teacher. This made them a really nice holiday gift.
