Bowmann here at BWonedotcom and we’re going to take a look at Microsoft Security Essentials which is the free antivirus program printed by Microsoft which is currently in Beta. So let’s take a look.
When you first install it and have it setup, the first screen you’ll see is the home tab and on the home tab you have your basic information such as if you have a real time protections on or if your virus & spyware definitions are up to date and on to the right of that, you can do a scan now and you have the opt in between a quick scan or full scan or a custom scan. The custom scan will like to pick specific location that you wanted to use scan and down here is where you’ll see the schedule of scan and you can change the schedule of scan right here. If you click that it will take you to the settings tab.
Next tab is the update tab, click update, create basic tab, you can just click on update, it’ll update your antivirus automatically. If you have bottom windows update turn it on, if it’s an automatic or a download let me choose when to install you know automatically it download those and notify you and let you know once you’ve installed them. And to make up this to install them automatically and you could see here on this tab you can check one last time with the definition it has created and the virus & spyware definition versions.
On the history tab is where all of the any detected items go, so if you have any detected items that they think maybe a virus it will show you which items have been detected and then on this particular video button here it shows you items that they have decided to quarantine because they’re not sure if they’re virus or spider or it might be something like jet and you can choose between remove them, restore them or you can remove more of the you know if you think they’re all viruses by the way and down here is the allowance items this allows you to put any of the ones that are legit software that you do know of that you can actually put in hand so that the next time Microsoft Security Essentials skins it won’t trigger that as a quarantine and try to quarantine the item again.
The next tab and your last tab is settings, you can change your schedule of scan here, you can change the default actions, so if it is a fair led you can have it remove immediately versus a lower led that you can have it at quarantine. You can also allow Microsoft Security Essentials or MSE rather just to choose the recommended action for you. You can choose to turn off your real time protection, you can exclude certain files and locations, exclude file types, exclude certain processes, if you’re going to the advance section you can actually choose the scanning archives, printing system explorer point, allow you to the full history, or you can check this box of and you actually scan with your drivers. So somebody has a USB pen drive or USB hard drive, they’re not sure if they have any type of viruses or something on it. You click on that it will scan it before it actually gets full of that. I will scan it before it allows it to be plugged in and to be used.
And Microsoft SpyNet, most antivirus programs have something similar to this. It’s basically allowing you to send more information and then with the help of protective battery you could choose a basic or advance membership so it’s up to you. And that’s pretty much it for Microsoft Security Essentials. It’s a very basic program on—it’s a very strict version of Windows Live. A little more advance than Windows Defender’s since it does protect against viruses whereas Windows Defender was more on the spyware side of things. It’s supposed to be free and then and not in competition with bigger companies like Symantec, McAfee, ESET, Kaspersky, and all the page description on the antivirus program. Microsoft is supposedly is aiming at more twist of people that don’t buy in antivirus program and don’t pay for yearly subscription so this is supposed to give you sometime to basic protection.
So I don’t—if you just can’t see what this goes, like I don’t see this being a direct competitor to those. But I do see this and maybe a competition and like ABG free, like some of those free antivirus programs that are offered out there. I’ve been running this for about two weeks. It’s very lightweight. I haven’t seen any system strain. Updates basically come daily. I haven’t seen it where it’s been like months, we’ll like you know, sorry it must have like days that it’s updated but it’s updated but it’s updated pretty much daily with the latest handy bars versus some of the other programs that would update it.
This updates daily which is kind of a good sign of things. So it would be interesting to see you where this really goes. I can see this sort of being—and once this is out of a beta and sort of being for—even they have sort of low cost machines and something like a network or something like that that it’s only want to put some type of cheap protection on it maybe. But I guess I don’t see this fully competing with any of the page description program. But it’s more of a shot if you compete but can’t afford an antivirus program this at least something on here from a very good company like Microsoft so we’ll see how well it protects, at least some type of protection.
So if you’ll able to sign up for the beta I would definitely try that. I think it’s limited to the US, Japan and Brazil I believe. But once it’s open up wider I would definitely try to give it a shot and see how it works for me.
