iPhone 3GS Review
Andi Barness: Hello and welcome to Neo-Fight.TV the technology show for the “not so geeky.” My name is Andi Barness.
Ben Freedman: And I’m Ben Freedman and today on the show huge announcement last week, huge announcement, earth shattering announcement the iPhone 3GS. It’s not the iPhone 3G it’s the iPhone 3GS.
Andi Barness: What does S mean?
Ben Freedman: Speed.
Andi Barness: Oh so it’s faster.
Ben Freedman: It is faster. It is faster than and here we have by the way the old iPhone 3G and here we have the new iPhone 3GS.
Andi Barness: It looks exactly the same.
Ben Freedman: Yes. It does look exactly the same and I got to admit it is nearly exactly the same.
Andi Barness: The new iPhone people are like in a grouping class all by yourself like you think you’re all good and all that.
Ben Freedman: You like to think so.
Andi Barness: Yeah. All right.
Ben Freedman: You lowly T-mobile customers down there one of these days.
Andi Barness: I long to be an iPhone user.
Ben Freedman: Well, you can get an iPhone 3G.
Andi Barness: Yup, just sign the contract that’s another story, go ahead.
Ben Freedman: Yes so. It’s faster. Allow me to demonstrate, I’ve got again here basically, I got the same thing on both phones and I’ve got a program on here called Peggle, it’s a game and what I’m going to do is my demo here for how much it is faster. I’m going to hold both of this up like this and you just take a look at this Peggle here and Peggle here. This the iPhone 3G on your left and what I’m going to do is I’m going to launch both amp I feel smarter come up a little stand to hold this right but I’m not so smart.
So basically launch them both at the same time and we will look and observe which one launches faster. Are you ready? Here we go. We’ll do the demo again, here we go. See this one has already got the screen up and it’s done, it’s loaded. This one over here is still thinking about it. You see these little bars still going along there. So you can see it’s like twice as fast. It’s a lot faster.
Andi Barness: All right well how much is it?
Ben Freedman: It’s actually the same price as the old iPhone. It was $199.00 with a two year contract.
Andi Barness: All right. So, so far are you paying the same price and it’s a little bit faster.
Ben Freedman: Yes, well this is an issue. If you’re on contract with AT&T you don’t get the 199 price.
Andi Barness: Okay so if I just bought my phone.
Ben Freedman: So let’s say you bought an iPhone a year ago when the 3G came out and now you want a new one that can be 199.
Andi Barness: And how much is it going to be?
Ben Freedman: I think it’s like 499.
Andi Barness: So then when I’m taken care of their—
Ben Freedman: No.
Andi Barness: But if I extend my contract will it be 199?
Ben Freedman: No.
Andi Barness: Oh I’m not liking that.
Ben Freedman: There’s talk about if you’re like a high dollar, if you’re spending like $500.00 a month with them or something you can make deals.
Andi Barness: So it’s a 199 if I want to go beyond a new customer right now.
Ben Freedman: Yes if you’ e never had an iPhone or if you had the first one from two years ago, you can then upgrade because the end of your two year contract for 199. That’s for about the way 16 gig there’s another one for 299 that’s 32 gigs.
The other thing that’s really big this bottle is a few geeky features just cut and paste, you can rotate it, landscape or a few other things that compass, there’s a compass in it now. Compass I don’t know who’s going to be using compass.
Andi Barness: What if you get lost.
Ben Freedman: If you get lost you had GPS and you had GPS then you still have GPS.
Andi Barness: Okay so it’s the GPS different, better, faster I mean it’s GPS.
Ben Freedman: It’s GPS.
Andi Barness: Right.
Ben Freedman: So that doesn’t have turn by turn directions they say that’s coming you can buy that down the road. But, what it does have that I think it’s my favorite new feature is it got a better camera and the camera now takes video.
Andi Barness: Oh that’s good.
Ben Freedman: So with your permission I’m going to shoot a photo of you so we can show people how much better the photos are and also shoot a little video. So here we are camera, first thing I’m going to shoot a photo.
Andi Barness: So, so far it’s faster and it has video. Is this camera?
Ben Freedman: This is camera so you when you take a picture you’re ready? Now you he’s big smile one, two, three. Beautiful.
Andi Barness: I love the sound, you need the camera sound.
Ben Freedman: Is it funny that we make a high tech device but we give it the old fashion camera sound.
Andi Barness: It’s just what we like. Okay.
Ben Freedman: So now I’m going to start taking some video, okay. All right so it is on so talk to me.
Andi Barness: Hi mom, let’s see how this works, like let’s see if you could really send this and it’s not going to look like.
Ben Freedman: How is your Father’s Day?
Andi Barness: Father’s Day was great.
Ben Freedman: Yeah have a good time with the kids you give your husband a break.
Andi Barness: Yeah. He got a little chop out but it was good.
Ben Freedman: Really.
Andi Barness: That’s always asked.
Ben Freedman: Whatever changed your crank so, we’re done let me get out of this so. Okay I will now put that now. One cool thing that you may not be able to see here is when I click this button here, here’s your video. I can actually take a look at this, you can email the video, right from the phone. You can upload it to YouTube right from the phone.
Andi Barness: And you couldn’t do that before.
Ben Freedman: Well it couldn’t take video before.
Andi Barness: Oh that’s right. I’m sorry.
Ben Freedman: Now, I’m not sure if you are on your phone I think you can email us but I don’t think you can send to YouTube.
Andi Barness: No.
Ben Freedman: Which is pretty darn cool.
Andi Barness: Right that is pretty cool.
Ben Freedman: Okay talk about, next time you’re government is danger being over thrown and you then not letting the reporters in, you can take video and upload it directly to YouTube.
Andi Barness: Right. Okay, all right so we’ve got faster GP, oh! I know my phone does the turn by turn on the GPS so does yours do that?
Ben Freedman: No.
Andi Barness: Even the new and improved.
Ben Freedman: Even the new and improve one does not do that. Yeah so they said you combine app like Tom, tom which is a maker of GPS. It’s coming out with us. Now let me show you the one nice thing they have done I know it’s used to really bug me was when it comes up with a new iPod that took a different cord, or different accessory. I wouldn’t fit in the old accessories. One of the things about the same form factors all of your old accessories will work with the new phone.
Andi Barness: All right.
Ben Freedman: So if you have an investment, let me show you a couple of those accessories that we got sent when the new phone got out.
First of all I don’t know if you can notice on the back of this it is virtually invisible. In fact it’s called the invisible shield. This is a clear protector that I stock on. It comes with a little spray it on. You stick to stick around and it’s going to protect that from scratches. Did you even realize up it was on there.
Andi Barness: Not at all, I mean you can feel it but —
Ben Freedman: You feel the edge?
Andi Barness: Now, you can get one to protect the front and the back but you don’t really need that because the front is glass.
Ben Freedman: This is probably called invisible shield or actually it has the product the company has called zag and I really like that because that will stop the back from getting all scratch up so when you go to sell it like I’m going to go sell this one, one of these days you can.
Andi Barness: I’m trying to negotiate for this by the way so far it’s not working.
Ben Freedman: Yeah, because we have — yeah okay. Two more little products that you might like here. Now, a lot of people constantly complain about the iPhone running on a battery. In fact all of these Smart phones I know yours, mine they all kind of have sucky battery life. So here’s a couple of products. This one is from a company called Case-mates. Basically this charges up separately via USB. Then you take your phone and you dock it in there like so.
Andi Barness: I really don’t want to like this but the hand is the coolest thing ever
Ben Freedman: Press this button and boom.
Andi Barness: That’s it.
Ben Freedman: You are now charging your iPhone from there and it has a clip on the back. Hold that and it is okay.
Andi Barness: So you can just wear it and charge it. I really don’t want to like this product.
Ben Freedman: 80 bucks flat.
Andi Barness: I really do.
Ben Freedman: What do you thing are the size of it?
Andi Barness: I don’t mind. I mean.
Ben Freedman: You know why it’s not going to fit on your belt jeans.
Andi Barness: It might give me a little added.
Ben Freedman: Little balls there.
Andi Barness: Exactly.
Ben Freedman: Now for people who don’t mind this has a pretty big battery in it. If you’re willing to sacrifice a little bit of battery life but want a thinner package that really just say don’t like it. You can mingle with this one. This is by company called Mophie and this one, this is the one I like. This is the juice pack air by Mophie also $80.00 and this one has full protection, it’s got a little lead and this slides in here like so. This slides on top like so and then switches on the button, turn it on and boom. Once again you’re charging now, what do you think of that one.
Andi Barness: Now, it’s pretty cool too.
Ben Freedman: Smaller and thinner?
Andi Barness: I think the fact that I have never seen them before that just gets me on excited so.
Ben Freedman: No they don’t have this for the G1 yet because none of the people on the G1
Andi Barness: Well, don’t give me sort it on, on my G1.
Ben Freedman: Yeah. So between the two you’ve got little bulkier but bigger battery or built-in thin.
Andi Barness: This would be good for the girls and this will be good for the guys and put them on their pants.
Ben Freedman: Yeah this one comes in purple too and a bunch of different colors.
Andi Barness: Really.
Ben Freedman: Yeah, so maybe the gals you’re right because you want to you know, yeah.
Andi Barness: Okay but this can be use for the regular G.
Ben Freedman: Any, yeah you can use this for the regular 3G or the new 3G, yes.
Andi Barness: So you mean $499.00 is a little bit faster
Ben Freedman: Yeah.
Andi Barness: It doesn’t give turn by turn.
Ben Freedman: No.
Andi Barness: And is it worth I mean.
Ben Freedman: It’s worth that I think I wouldn’t rush out and buy one except that of course I did. But I think it’s worth it if you don’t have an iPhone or if you’re off contract. It’s worth it if you’re an iPhone geek.
Andi Barness: Yeah.
Ben Freedman: And with that long, long segment we’ve got the iPhone 3GS for speed, with cool video and other stuff we’ve got the Case-mate fuel it’s called the Case-mate fuel rechargeable pack for the iPhone and we’ve got the Mophie juice pack air. Very cool products and now the cool products coming right after this so please stay tuned.
And welcome back to Neo-Fight.TV and the second spot like today we are looking at this, now and then you’re kind of new here so you probably don’t realize what a bag-a-holic I am.
Andi Barness: Well, if I sort of look around the studio yeah I know.
Ben Freedman: I love bags and I’m always looking for the next greatest bag to store all my stuff in and this is an amazing bag designed for photographers from the company called Think Tank. This is the Think Tank Street Walker hard drive. Professional bag not designed for the —don’t touch the bag, did I say don’t touch the bag. Do not touch the bag.
Andi Barness: Oh my goodness. It’s like a girl and her purses.
Ben Freedman: Okay you can touch the bag.
Andi Barness: Okay thanks.
Ben Freedman: This is designed for professional photographers and I got them in. It’s just about the best photo. It’s got more features than just by any photo bag I’ve ever seen.
Andi Barness: And you know your bags?
Ben Freedman: I do know my bags.
Andi Barness: By the way, why do they always come in black though? I mean everything is black, do they have it like other colors like pink or are there any girl photographers out there?
Ben Freedman: No there are no girl photographers.
Andi Barness: Is it because it’s slimming. It makes it look slimmer that’s why they put it in black?
Ben Freedman: I don’t know. I guess they need to figure out how many they are going to sell in pink and I just don’t know how many pink girl photographers out there who would want pink. Yeah the promise is the girl photographers are competing with the boy photographers and they think they need to have a black bag to look professional.
Andi Barness: T o compete, okay.
Ben Freedman: I don’t know. I’m making myself as a —
Andi Barness: All right continue.
Ben Freedman: All right allow me to demonstrate here. I don’t like to hate meal from this episode you know that.
Andi Barness: Yeah you’re saying and not me, go ahead, keep going.
Ben Freedman: Okay so let me show you first of all, I love these. Check out the quality on these zips. I mean look at the big the hardware I mean that’s not going anywhere.
Andi Barness: Did you say that, sorry.
Ben Freedman: And similarly on the back here they’ve got metal D-rings. That’s important. I love my D-rings and really good padding, feel that padding on the back.
Andi Barness: I mean that’s so compact. Well that’s pretty good. You would need it because this is really heavy bag.
Ben Freedman: Well you know it’s heavy because of all the stuff inside. Let me open this up here and I’ve got a few gadgets in here but I’ve also got the playing room it’s got one of this divider sort of systems here where you can put all your stuff in. It’s got this really nice clear pockets, feel the clear pockets where you can put like a memory cards. What’s great about that being clear is you can see what’s in them before you open them. So you know which one your memory card is in. Isn’t that thoughtful?
Andi Barness: Great for makeup.
Ben Freedman: Great for makeup, awesome for makeup or a camera. Here I’ve got my big Nikon SLR in here and let’s see if it fits in there really quite nicely, you could fit a bunch of other lenses in here and then.
Andi Barness: And you sort of move around, right.
Ben Freedman: They are all Velcro, yeah good point. They are all Velcro so you can change the size of everything in here and make things bigger, make things smaller if you got longer lenses. You can move this up and down for longer, shorter lenses you can put that stuff in there as well and then the reason it’s called these Street Walker hard drive is —
Andi Barness: It’s have a hidden compartment.
Ben Freedman: Well it’s not so hidden but if you take a look here it’s got another zipper over here and if I slide this open you get a whole separate case, a whole separate area for your laptop.
Andi Barness: That’s pretty neat.
Ben Freedman: So your laptop just slides right inside so you can now only carry your camera gear, you can carry your—
Andi Barness: Well, it’s probably not as heavy now.
Ben Freedman: It is much lighter.
Andi Barness: All right oh yeah.
Ben Freedman: Because there is nothing in it.
Andi Barness: Right.
Ben Freedman: Now, I know a lot of people you are asking there well but then where do my I put my tripod? I know a lot of people ask me that.
Andi Barness: Ben, where do I put my tripod.
Ben Freedman: I’m glad you ask that so you know a lot of camera photographers have to carry the tripod as well. You notice this little tab on the bottom here. Go ahead and pull that tab out.
Andi Barness: Oh look at that.
Ben Freedman: Look at that, this is a tripod holder. You put a foot of your tripod in there. It comes with straps that go on the top here and your tripod just sits in there and gets bungee basically to the top and by the way there are all kinds of stuff in here as well like for pens and pencils and different stuffs so you can put your tripod foot right in there.
Andi Barness: All right how much is it? Wait let me think. I would think something like this.
Ben Freedman: Now it’s for professionals, it’s not designed for your point and shoot, me and Jane.
Andi Barness: I would think something like this as like over $300.00.
Ben Freedman: Well you know you can get this for in that ball part but Think Tank I think makes a very good product. This is guy is a $180.00.
Andi Barness: Well, that’s pretty good.
Ben Freedman: It also got ones with the rollers. They got ones with the handles that come up for a flying on planes so I got to tell you I am very impress with that product.
Andi Barness: I could see why you like it. I don’t think the price is bad either.
Ben Freedman: Look here’s the 3D view.
Andi Barness: I like it, thumbs up.
Ben Freedman: Okay sorry there is even a little spot in the top for your business cards. So always have a business card handy when you need it but something says hey what do you do? You can put like ten in there and be ready to grab one out.
Andi Barness: Perfect.
Ben Freedman: Perfect. That is the Think Tank Street Walker hard drive, a great backpack for photographers. That’s all the time we have this week so please send us a comment. What do you think of the price, 180 bucks, too much, too little to spend on a photo backpack or do you have another photo backpack you prefer or are you upgrading to the iPhone 3GS, send us a comment.
Andi Barness: Or do you want it in pink.
Ben Freedman: Or do you want it in a pink. The place to send us that comment is www.neo-fight.tv. That’s where you can go and leave us all your comments where everyone can read and benefit from your wisdom and if you have an extra 30 seconds.
