Hi and welcome to episode four of our ten part series on iPhone basics. I’m Andy Walker, the disembodied voice and this is my iPhone 3G.
In this episode I’ll talk a little bit more about applications or apps as they are known iPhone apps and how you can install them either for fee or for free and how you can manipulate them as well. So, as you can see I have lots of application on this iPhone. Some of them I paid for, some of them I got for free. My access to them is through the Apps Store. It has this little icon down here, you just click on that.
So the App Store is basically just as it sounds. It’s a software store for the iPhone and you can download hundreds and hundreds of programs for other free or for pay I should say depending on what you want to do.
Let’s start here, I’m going to click on the Top 25. This is the Top 25 application on iTunes at a moment and this all the paid ones. The price is down here and the name of the product is here and if you want to find out more click on it and then you can read all about it. You can scroll down. See pictures of the actual application. You can review it and if you choose you can also buy it. Now showing installed because I already have installed on my computer.
If you want to buy something, what you will do is you need to have an iTunes account on your computer and the price for the product is here. When you touch it, you can say buy now and it’s a large application so unless you connect to wirelessly it won’t come down or you could buy it through iTunes. Let’s find an easier application to use here.
Maybe we can go down to the bottom here and find something through a photo a Fish Tycoon. This is a smaller application and you’ll see the price and I’ll click that and buy now and it will ask me for my iTunes password and I’m not going to enter this here but this is the iTunes password I created for my iTunes account and I will be billed to my credit cards set up for that account and this will download.
I want to show you how to download something. We’re choosing not to buy this, this time. Let’s go and get a free one so top paid or top free. So find an application that we can get, we can demonstrate to download and get it for free as well. So, remember I click on Top 25. I’ll look for top paid and top free, I click on top free.
So let me get this program called the Topple. It says free. Good and I will click on free. It’s going to say install and I’ll click on the install. You can see the clock is working here it’s actually accessing the server. It’s asking me for my iTunes’ password so I’m going to enter that but I'm going to hide it from you.
So I’m typing this in with the on screen keyboard as you can see and I will click okay and as you can see down here it is loading. Now it is coming off of the network across the cellular network so this is going to cost you bandwidth or connection charges bases on your data plan.
So most people have lots of data if it’s in case unlimited so it won’t cost you anything extra but note that this actually does take a toll on your data plans so if you have unlimited data plan be fairly conservative about what you download.
This is loading now and this is the base we’re going to take off until such time that, that is installed. Once it installed you’re ready to go. You’re ready to use it, simply touch the application. In fact, I remember before I showed you prices of the Price is Right. Let me see if I can find that application. That one I installed in my computer and it costs me $499.00 and this is the Price is Right application, there you go. I'm going to go back to main screen here. Let’s see what that other is doing. It is still installing.
Okay, while that’s going on let’s do one more thing. What if I wanted to take my Facebook application which I’ve installed here and put it down here on to my dock? Let me show you how to do that while waiting for this installation to occur. So, I’m going to hold the Facebook icon down and it’s going to start to jiggle. That means it’s in move mode now so what I’m going to do is do that again. Everything is in move mode. I’m going to move this program off and I’m going to hold Facebook and I will put it down and put it on.
Now to turn off the jiggle mode, to turn off move mode I’m just going to push this button once like that or I can go back to the way it was. Again, hold any icon down until it jiggles. Move the icon off. Grab the icon you want, put it back on or of course I can move it to other positions too. To stop jiggle or stop move mode I’m going to click here and off you go. One of the things I should show you.
Let’s go back to that program that we just installed. Now, what happen to it well, it doesn’t matter let’s just deal with, with this one here. This is a free application called Impossible. If I want to delete that application then what is I hold it down until it jiggles and then I going to touch the X right here. It is going to say, “Do you want me to delete this application?” And I say, “Yes, please. Delete it. I can rate it too. I can rate let's say its three out of five stars. Once I delete it if I want or I can say no thanks. I’ll click rate and it’s going to delete off my iPhone creating some space on there.
Click the button once again to turn off jiggle mode so that nothing else can be impacted or remove. And that is a guide to the basics of iPhone applications. Don’t forget to check out other tutorials from this ten part series with iPhone basics from Butterscotch.com. I’m Andy Walker, the Executive Producer. I’ll see you next time.
