iPod and Hearing Loss

Brian: I listen my iPod with head phones that go directly into my ear and I was wondering at what point that could set damages my hearing.

Dr. Paul R. Kileny: These portable devices like iPods are really great devices to use. They are not inherently harmful to hearing because of the way there couple to the ear, but there are certainly safe levels at which one can listen to them. And my recommendation would be is to set the level at which individuals are listening to these. At such level that they can still hear conversation and at a level where other people in their environment do not accuse them of shouting when they attempt to converse or ask a question or answer a question.
