Hi! This is Blair Glenn. I am an ISA Certified Arborist. And today, I would like to talk to you a little bit about planting very large container trees.
Many of the cities require planting 36 and 48 inch box trees, sometimes even larger.
If trees need to come out for one reason or another, many of the cities imposed a requirement to replace them with very large trees.
The cost of these trees is very expensive.
These expensive trees are often root bound as they have been growing in a big pot for a long time or in some cases, they have been transplanted into large spots either from smaller container that were root bound or in some cases they were dragged up out of the ground where there is a lot of root damage.
These trees are kept in high quality soil and irrigated so they stay alive, but a lot of times they are not the best specimen.
I spend hours looking for the best specimens for this particular client, shaking the trees for stability, looking into the pots for good rooting, looking for signs of girdling roots, all the negative things that you find in potted trees.
Another aspect of planting a large tree in the soil is you have a tree in very good soil that is going into the native soil so you have a disparity of environments.
I have planted hundreds if not thousand of trees in my life and I have noticed that when I plant a very large tree in the ground, it often times carries on in essences of big bonsai. It grows very slowly, where is if I put a young tree in a one gallon or five gallon or even a 15 galloon that is been taking care off appropriately, then those young trees almost always exceed the larger container trees and become long live better specimens.
So, I have to question the requirements that sometimes are made upon people to plant this less than perfect larger trees where is a younger tree will evolve to the environment and become a better long term specimen for our city.
So, those are my thoughts. Once again, this is Blair Glenn. I am an ISA Certified Arborist and have a good day.
